Easter Egg and Present Ideas For Kids

Nathalie French – April 2023

I just love Easter! Like Christmas it is an awesome opportunity for family time and good food, but the decoration is much lighter and makes you want to go outside instead of cuddling up next to the fireplace.

The Easter Baskets of my two girls and my husband (because adults are just kids too ;-))

Don’t criticize me for that, but my kids get quite some treats and present in this special time of the year. My focus is on a fun and exciting easter egg hunt. My two girls still believe in the easter bunny, but I can see that they are getting suspicious. Especially when easter eggs appear in the garden after mom just went outside “to check on the trash cans” or some other very weird reason. Well…I try my best :-)

In this blog post I want to share my main thoughts on making the easter egg hunt fun but without to spend a fortune.

Currently we live in Germany and the most expensive thing here are the plastic eggs themselves. Easter Egg hunt has been around for a while, but kids often find real, hard-boiled eggs or egg-shaped candy. Putting the Candy in reusable plastic eggs is not a thing. In the past years I bought them on Amazon (there they are quite expensive, but you can find special ones like the sport-eggs) or on my trips to the US (there I buy them everywhere: Target, HEB, Hobby Lobby and of course the Dollar Stores). Over the years I accumulated around 300 eggs of different sizes and colors and of course we use them every year

The candy itself needs to do three things for us: 1. Obviously it must fit in the eggs, 2. It has to taste good and 3. It shouldn’t be too expensive as I need quite a lot (100 - 200 pieces “hunt event”). If I have the choice between bigger but not so tasty candy and a smaller but better-tasting alternative I would always go for the second option.

I found out that my kids are not focused so much on the candy itself but more on the activity of hunting and gathering, collecting the eggs, putting them in their baskets, counting them and every now and then they open an egg and enjoy the candy. This year for example I bought very small candy (small chocolate eggs about 1 cm in length at our local Aldi store) and kids were not disappointed.

During Easter we would have several easter hunts. Usually, one just by ourselves. Me, my husband and my two girls. Another one at Grandmas house and one with friends. I often reuse the eggs that have been found before and sometimes I even re-hide some of the eggs in the next easter egg hunt. As I said my kids are more focused on the fun of finding than on the accumulation of candy, so they don’t realize that some are missing.

Like on Christmas the kids get quite some presents and I also wrap them in colorful, spring-themed paper. Those presents I hide along the eggs in the garden. Other than on Christmas the presents are not as expensive, sometimes they even come from the dollar store. If possible, they are easter themed and many times its crafting related. This year I got plastic eggs for coloring, a 3D-paper project, unicorn drinking-cups and activity books. The “big present” was a miniature crafting project. (I only realized after what I got myself into with this as it is quite detailed…)
